Legal matters

In addition to our Club rules and Code of Practice, here are some useful links to information about the laws governing our hobby in the UK:

BMFA Drone and Model Flying websiteHow to operate your model safely and lawfully. Includes an alternative option to the CAA remote pilot theory test that is better aligned to traditional model flying.
CAA Article 16 AuthorisationA guide to the authorisation negotiated by national associations in Dec 2020 under which the LMAS operates.
CAP 722CAP 722 is the primary guidance document for the operation of unmanned aircraft systems within the UK. It is intended to assist those who are involved in all aspects of the development and operation of UAS, and applies whenever a member is not flying under the Article 16 Authorisation
Operator and Remote Pilot registrationThe CAA website describing the law around registration and offering the theory test for remote pilots along with operator registration.
Mandatory Occurrence Reporting (CAA and AAIB)Determining which incidents are reportable to the CAA and AAIB under Article 16 is a little complex, so the BMFA have created a reporting wizard to help pilots determine the correct action – please use it if you believe there is any chance an incident at an LMAS field is reportable (more information on incidents in scope on the BMFA site).
